Professor Emmanuel Nnadozie

Professor Emmanuel Nnadozie is the Executive Secretary of the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF).

Prof. Nnadozie is an educator, economist, professor of economics, author and development expert. His work spans over 30 years in the development sector. Prior to his selection for ACBF, he was Chief Economist and Director of the Macroeconomic Policy Division and before then the Director of the Economic Development and NEPAD Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) which he joined in 2004. At the UNECA, Prof. Nnadozie led the production of the well acclaimed annual Economic Report on African from 2010 to 2013; the Least developed Countries Monitor and the annual Africa MDGs Report for 4 years. He also served as a UN representative at various intergovernmental and continental forums and as coordinator for the UN system-wide support to Africa’s development as well as the focal point for UN/UNECA’s relations with African Union Commission, NEPAD Secretariat and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

Before joining the UNECA, Prof. Nnadozie taught economics from 1989 to 2004 at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. While at Truman, he also held a fellowship at University of Oxford and a visiting professorship at University of North Carolina. In 1992 he obtained a federal grant to establish the university’s McNair Scholars Program—a predoctoral programme for underrepresented students. Emmanuel Nnadozie has written several books and book chapters which include among others, African Economic Development. Recognized as an educator, Emmanuel Nnadozie is member of many Honor societies and organizations. He received higher degrees at the University of Nigeria Nsukka and the Université de Paris 1 Sorbonne.

Professor Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu

Professor & Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, University of Pretoria

Prof Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu is the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria. She was previously the Director of the School for Public Management and Administration (SPMA) in the Faculty. Before she joined the University of Pretoria, she was the Executive Director of Economic Performance and Development at the Human Sciences Research Council. Prof Chitiga-Mabugu obtained a PhD in Economics at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. She conducts research on economic developmental issues and is mainly interested in analysing the impact of policies on society and the economy at large. She is a member of the Stockholm Environment Institute Science Advisory Council as well as a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. She is co-chair of the International Technical Group for the Climate Action for Jobs Initiative. She is a member and scientific advisor of the Partnership for Economic Policy network.

Professor Miracle Benhura

Associate Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Her research interests are in applied micro-econometrics with a special focus on labour and development economics. She has done work on (i) income distribution and the potential of redistributive systems in Africa, (ii) intra-household resource allocation, (iii) gender differentials in health and labour market outcomes, (iv the economics of education, (v) crime and subjective well-being, (vi) multidimensional poverty and spatial heterogeneity in well-being.

Professor Nicholas Ngepah

Professor of Economics at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.

He is an expert in quantitative research techniques, economic development and policy impact assessments, including assessment of spatial effects. He has wide range of experience on development issues, with core expertise in poverty, inequality, labour market dynamics and inclusive economic growth with related policies like international trade, regional integration health, industrialisation, energy and climate change. He has completed research exercises for international organisations like the World Bank, UK Overseas Development institute, African Economic Research Consortium; local research organisations Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the IDRC, Oxfam and the South African Government. His most recent works include: Economic Growth, inequality and State Fragility nexus; economic inclusion and state fragility in Africa; Poverty effects of regional and continental trade-integration in Africa; climate change and economic growth projections, inclusive growth theories and practise; value chains and the poor in Southern Africa. His recent work on the SDGs in Africa formed part of the bases of the policies debated in the context of the first 1000 days of the SDGs implementation under Development Progress. He has previously served as economic expert at the South African Competition Commission, where he led impact assessments of market structures and spearheaded investigation of cases of anticompetitive practices and merger evaluation, involving pricing behaviours and broader impacts. He has undertaken various projects involving large multi-country surveys and data analyses in Southern Africa. In his role as Professor of Economics at the University of Johannesburg, he lectures microeconomics and micro econometrics-related subjects and coordinates the PhD and Masters Research Degree programme at the School of Economics. He supervises PhDs and Masters Research students in various economic development-relevant topics. He has initiated and established the agenda for the African Institute for Inclusive Growth, an emerging think tank that deals with issues of inclusive economic development in Africa.
